How to Order a Custom Roof Light Online in Five Steps
From measuring the upstand to the delivery lorry: the whole made-to-order process, step by step, including the mistakes that cost people a remake.
Ordering bespoke glass used to mean a site visit, a fortnight of silence and a quote in an envelope. The whole point of our online calculators is that a builder on a scaffold — or a homeowner at a kitchen table — can price and order a made-to-measure roof light in minutes. Here is the process from first measurement to delivery, with the traps flagged.
Step 1: Measure the opening properly
The size we need is the internal opening of the upstand — the timber kerb the roof light will sit on. Measure in millimetres, at both ends of each axis (upstands are rarely perfectly square), and use the smaller figure. If the upstand is not built yet, decide the roof light size first and have your builder construct the upstand to suit.
Step 2: Choose your range
Frameless for invisible sightlines and maximum sky; framed for the practical all-rounder at a sharper price; walk-on where the glass doubles as a floor — terraces, patios over basements, balconies. All three are manufactured to order in our Liverpool factory.
Step 3: Size and specify in the calculator
Type your width and length and the price updates instantly — that is the whole trick. Then choose the glass: clear, solar-control for south-facing roofs, frosted for privacy, self-cleaning coatings, double or triple glazed. Each option reprices live, so you can see exactly what an upgrade costs before committing to it.
Step 4: Sense-check before checkout
Read the order back against your measurements — width against width, length against length. Transposed dimensions are the single most common ordering error in bespoke glass, and a made-to-measure unit is made to the measurements on the order. If anything about your roof is unusual, call 03330 902 592 before you pay; two minutes on the phone beats a remake.
Step 5: Delivery and the day itself
Bespoke units typically dispatch in around two to three weeks, delivered free to UK mainland addresses — most on our own transport. Time the order so the unit arrives once the upstand is built and weathered: a roof light is safest installed straight from the crate, not stored on site for a month.
Something the calculators cannot handle — a special shape, an oversized span, a particular glass build-up? That is what the custom made roof lights page is for. Every order, standard or special, carries the 20-year guarantee and our lowest-price promise.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay for the roof light before it is made?
Yes — made-to-order manufacture starts once the order is confirmed and paid, which is what keeps factory-direct pricing sharp.
Can I change my order after placing it?
Call us immediately on 03330 902 592. Before the glass is cut we can usually amend; once your unit is in production the sizes are committed.
What if I am not confident measuring?
Use our measuring guide, or have your builder measure and read the figures to us over the phone — we will sense-check anything unusual before it reaches the factory floor.
Do you deliver anywhere in the UK?
Yes, UK mainland delivery is free on every order. Stock items typically arrive within a week; bespoke units in around two to three weeks.
