What is a frameless roof light?
A frameless roof light is a flat glazed unit set flush into a roof upstand, with minimal visible frame at the internal finish. Learn how they are built, where they are used and how they differ from framed alternatives.
A frameless roof light is a flat glazed unit set into a prepared roof upstand so the internal finish appears almost edge-to-edge glass. Unlike a framed roof light, where an aluminium frame is visible at the ceiling, a frameless unit presents a clean, flush sight line that suits contemporary extensions, kitchen diners and loft conversions.
How a frameless roof light is constructed
At Vant Glass, every frameless unit is manufactured to order at our Aintree workshop in Liverpool. The sealed glass unit typically combines a toughened outer pane with a laminated inner pane — the standard build-up for overhead glazing where safety and retention of glass fragments matter.
Double- and triple-glazed options are available, with argon-filled cavities and low-emissivity coatings to manage heat loss. A decorative border (RAL 9005 black as standard) frames the external face of the glass and forms part of the weathering detail against the upstand.
Frameless vs framed — which to choose?
The glazing technology is similar; the difference is how the unit meets the building:
- Frameless — minimal internal frame, flush with plasterboard or ceiling lining. Best where you want the aperture to read as pure glass.
- Framed — a defined aluminium frame at the internal and external edge. Often preferred where a visible frame aids weathering, fixing or matches other fenestration.
Both approaches are available as custom frameless or custom framed roof lights. For unusual shapes, pitches or multi-unit layouts, a bespoke roof light review may be more appropriate.
Where frameless roof lights are used
Frameless flat roof lights are specified wherever a flat or shallow-pitched roof needs daylight without a bulky internal frame. Typical applications include:
- Single-storey rear extensions and orangery-style additions
- Kitchen and living areas in open-plan layouts
- First-floor rooms with a flat roof section above
- Light wells over basements or lower ground floors (fixed units only — not walk-on)
They are fixed daylighting units. If you need a surface you can walk across, that is a separate product category — see walk-on roof lights for structural foot-traffic glazing.
Installation and the timber upstand
A frameless roof light is a heavy sealed unit. Its weight must bear onto a timber upstand on all four sides. The structural opening cut in the roof deck must be smaller than the inner glass pane so the glass laps onto timber around the entire perimeter.
The glazing tape and structural silicone seal and bond the unit — they are not designed to support its weight. If the opening is cut too wide, the inner pane cantilevers over the void, the seal can creep under load, and the glass may eventually slip. Always confirm opening dimensions against the manufacturer’s setting-out drawing before cutting.
Glazing options
Thermally toughened safety glass is available in double- and triple-glazed builds. Solar control, self-cleaning and tinted coatings can be added depending on orientation and overheating risk. Border width (the decorative edge band) affects the maximum clear glass size achievable within structural limits — configure options in the calculator to see compatible dimensions.
Summary
A frameless roof light delivers maximum daylight with a minimal internal frame. Specify the correct opening size, a properly formed upstand and the right glazing build for your thermal and safety requirements. Vant Glass manufactures every unit in Britain, backed by a 20-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
What does frameless mean on a roof light?
Frameless refers to the internal finish: the glazed unit sits flush with the ceiling lining with minimal visible frame. Externally the glass still meets a prepared upstand and weathering detail — the difference from framed units is the slim internal edge profile.
Can you walk on a frameless roof light?
No. Standard frameless flat roof lights are designed to admit daylight only and must not be walked on. For structural foot traffic you need a dedicated walk-on unit with a multi-pane laminated build rated for imposed loads.
How is a frameless roof light fixed?
The sealed unit is set onto a timber upstand using glazing tape and structural silicone. The glass weight must bear down onto the upstand on all four sides — the seal bonds and weatherproofs the unit but is not designed to carry its load.
What glass does a Vant Glass frameless roof light use?
Units are built with thermally toughened safety glass in double- or triple-glazed configurations. A laminated inner pane is standard for overhead safety, paired with a toughened outer pane and argon-filled cavity.
What sizes are available?
Frameless roof lights are made to measure to the millimetre. Configure width, length and decorative border size in the online calculator — maximum clear glass dimensions depend on your chosen border width and glazing specification.
