Anti-Slip, Opaque or Clear: Choosing the Finish for Walk-On Glass

The glass build of a walk-on roof light is decided by engineering: toughened panes laminated into a structural sheet, with an insulating cavity beneath it for external use. The finish of the top surface, by contrast, is a design decision, and it is worth making deliberately. Clear, opaque and anti-slip glass each behave differently underfoot, from below and in the rain, and the right one depends on where the panel is going.

Clear glass: maximum daylight

Clear is the default and for good reason. It transmits the most light of the three finishes, which is exactly what you want when the panel exists to brighten a basement or lower-ground room. From below it reads as a window in the ceiling; from above it is a window in the floor, which is the dramatic effect most people are after when they first ask for a glass floor.

The trade-offs are the flip side of that transparency. There is no privacy: anyone standing on the glass is fully visible from the room beneath, which is fine for a hallway and less fine for a bedroom. And a polished glass surface offers the least grip of the three when it is wet. For an internal floor in a dry space, clear is usually the answer. For an external terrace, think carefully before choosing it.

Opaque glass: privacy without losing the light

Opaque walk-on glass is acid-etched on the top pane so that it diffuses light rather than transmitting a sharp image. Most of the daylight still passes through — the room below is bright, with a soft, even quality of light — but the view is blurred to shapes and shadows in both directions.

It is the finish to choose when a walk-on panel sits over a room where people would rather not be looked down on, or where the terrace above is used by guests or neighbours. It also hides the underside of footprints and the small marks any floor collects, so the panel looks cleaner for longer from below. Etching adds a modest amount of grip compared with polished clear glass, but it is not a substitute for a dedicated anti-slip finish where the surface gets wet.

Anti-slip glass: grip for wet surfaces

Anti-slip walk-on glass carries a textured, patterned surface on the top pane that gives foot traffic something to bite on when the glass is wet. It is the finish we recommend for roof terraces, balconies, paths across flat roofs and any external panel — in other words, wherever the panel will see rain, frost or the occasional spilled drink.

Building regulations expect floor surfaces to be safe to walk on and slip resistance is central to that; an anti-slip finish is the straightforward way to give a glass floor the same confidence as the paving or decking around it. The texture scatters a little light, so an anti-slip unit is marginally less transparent than clear glass, and it wants a periodic scrub with a soft brush to keep the pattern clean. Neither is a reason to avoid it on an exposed surface.

Which finish where

• Internal landing, hallway or bridge (dry): clear for the full glass-floor effect; opaque if the room below wants privacy.
• Internal floor over a bedroom or bathroom: opaque.
• External terrace, balcony or roof path: anti-slip. Opaque anti-slip is not a standard combination, so if privacy also matters, plan the terrace layout so the panel sits over a hallway or utility space rather than a bedroom.
• Light well or panel over a basement, external: anti-slip if it will be walked on regularly; clear only if the panel is largely decorative and stays dry.

What the finish does not change

Choosing a finish alters the top pane's surface treatment and nothing else.
